Ad Blocking Software List
The popularity of adblocking software has resulted in a very large number of adblocking software packages. We’re not necessarily against the concept of adblocking software, but we feel that it is important that the software is well designed, configurable, and installed deliberately by the computer user.
There are a large number of ad-blocking software packages available, some are much better designed than others. We recommend that you take a good look at what’s available before deciding which software to use. If you must use adblocking software, we’d recommend that you find one that is very configurable and is visible in its operation so you know when a website has been modified by the software.
Pop-up Stopper Companion Toolbar
Panicware - Primarily a pop-up blocker. Also has privacy features that clean up cookies, visited URLs, and images. Has a configurable list of blocked and allowed pop-ups. Does not block on-page advertisements.

Mozilla Adblock Project
Mozilla.org
The Adblock project, a project of the Mozdev.org group is a plugin for the Mozilla browser that does image filtering. The good news is that AdBlock is completely configurable by the end user, and nothing is blocked by default (currently) until the user ads in filtering rules. This project is under development and has the potential to become a very well-designed adblocking solution that will hopefully evolve into a product that blocks fairly and effectively.

AdSubtract
InterMute
AdSubtract is designed for blocking advertisements on the Internet. It comes with an extensive blacklist. While AdSubtract blocks virtually all types of advertisements, including pop-ups, pop-unders, banners, and Google Adsense, it’s operation is very visible. AdSubtract does not block plain text-links. AdSubtract has a toolbar that has a visible indication and reports of all sites that were blocked. The user can easily manage the list of sites that are blocked. However, the blocking that AdSubtract does is quite aggresive and as a result, it actually blocks many entire websites, not only advertising.

Norton Internet Security
Symantec, Inc.
Norton Internet Security is primarily a firewall product that comes with an ad-blocking/filtering component. the AdBlocking is difficult to configure and the software operation is entirely invisible. It’s impossible to tell if a site you’re looking at has modified by blocking-software making it difficult for the user to understand what is happening. The interface is not well designed for the user to understand what is blocked.

Few steps for better, safer, faster browsing:
1., Switch to Firefox NOW if you haven’t done that already!
2., Install Adblock (https://addons.update.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?application=firefox&id=10) - this is the best known adblocking solution available
3., Use Spywareblaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) - a free program preventing malicious ActiveX programs to install on your system
4., Use Spybot S&D and Ad-aware and scan your system regularly (both of them are free for private use)
5., Use Norton Anti Virus 2005 - The best AV solution, definietly worth its price!
That is what I do at home.

you may want to add another excellent adblock application call PithHelmet which is an advanced ad blocking application for Apple’s Safari browser.

It should be noted that Privoxy is not really for average joe user as it has a horrible learning curve and takes a significant amount of time and effort to configure to specific needs. It also has been without an update for a year.
Excellent is NOT a word that should be used to describe PithHelmet for Safari. As yet i’ve found no good interactive ad-block software for Safari. PithHelmet is at best, marginal.
Why no sophisticated, real-time, ad blocking add-ons have appeared for Safari or Camino is something i find completely baffling!
CSS ad blocking will work on most any Mac OS X Browser but i find this a completely unacceptable solution for several reasons:
1 - The user has no indication what is and is not being blocked
2 - Any alteration to the CSS file requires restarting the browser
3 - One needs a fair understanding of CSS to make any alterations to “filter rules”
Where the heck is the Privoxy equivalent for the non-guru? (i.e. For the person who wants precise interactive control over what is blocked and how, but doesn’t have an encyclopedic knowledge of regular expressions and doesn’t want to deal with complicated multi-level filtering schemes.)

Firefox with adblock and filterset.G rules!!!
July 21st, 2005 at 5:22 pm
Hi, I use Firefox with Adblock (on mandriva linux) Excellent, I do however set adblock to hide the ads rather than block them, that way the website owner can show that they have delivered the number of impressions of the ad, and get paid, I however havent seen an ad for years, I notice now that I am hiding the google syndication ads from your site, dpon’t worry though I did download them to write only memory!!
everybody wins.
